Formal talks conclude, top leaders to seek consensus
The meeting has decided to hold talks in the future, starting with a meeting of the top leaders scheduled for today. The top leaders of the four major political parties-- Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, UCPN (Maoist) and Madhes-based parties-- have been given the responsibility to seek consensus.
Earlier, today, talks resumed ending the country’s long standing political deadlock after the disgruntled opposition parties, led by UCPN (Maoist), decided to sit for talks.
The opposition alliance decided to sit for talks following the PM Koirala’s verbal commitment to draft the constitution through consensus.
PM Koirala had invited senior leaders from the ruling coalition-- NC and CPN-UML-- and the UCPN (M) led 30-party opposition bloc to his official residence for the meeting.
UCPN (M) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, along with other leaders, have arrived for the meeting, PM’s press aide Prakash Adhikari said.
Today's meeting focused on the works performed by Questionnaire Committee and the major issues of contention in constitution writing process.
The meeting became possible after talks between PM Koirala and UCPN (M) Chairman Dahal, on Friday, yeilded an agreement to hold formal discussions to end the current political impasse. A subsequent meeting of four major parties decided that the meeting would be held today at 9 am.
Dialogue has been stalled since the Constituent Assembly formed the Questionnaire Committee on January 25 without the consent of the Maoist, Madhesi and Janajati parties.
